About David Atwell
David F. Atwell was the founder of Resort Properties of America and a Las Vegas resident since 1955. His family moved here from San Francisco and became prominent and active in the motel/hotel business. Mr. Atwell is a graduate of The University of Nevada Las Vegas with a Bachelor’s in 1974. Soon after he entered the Real Estate business with McKellar Realty/Development with extensive holdings in apartments, income properties, and motels. David learned from some of the best and then in 1979, Mr. Atwell founded his private brokerage, Resort Properties of America, specializing in motel/hotel/casino strip property transactions. He at the time was most known for handling the sale of The Dunes Hotel/Casino & Country Club (now MGM’s flagship Bellagio, as well as City Center, and Monte Carlo). Extremely valuable property to say the least. This was a landmark transaction, as it was the largest commissionable sale, and the largest purchase by a billionaire Japanese investor in the state of Nevada. The purchase was made in direct bidding competition with the likes of Sheldon Adelson, MGM, Hilton, and Steve Wynn whom are Mr. Atwell’s friends and clients to this day. Following his long standing tradition and reputation of “big deal making” Atwell initiated the 2007 record breaking sale of the $1.2 Billion Frontier Hotel to ELAD of New York. The hotel has been imploded and the site designated for the $5Billion “Plaza Las Vegas”. Modeled after the famous Plaza Hotel in New York.
Mr. Atwell passed away November 25, 2013 from cancer and after working side by side for over 8 years with her Father, David’s oldest daughter, Heather has taken over the legendary business.
